Overview
The oil discovery in Kenya has currently generated so much excitement in the oil industry and general public, in particular the Department of Geology feels a strong need to launch a postgraduate course in petroleum geoscience to train young Kenyans for manpower development in the oil industry. Being the only department in the country that still continues to train postgraduate geology for manpower requirements for this nation, the Department of Geology has necessary experienced expertise to launch such a course.
The objectives of this program shall be to produce competent geoscientists equipped with knowledge and skills to:
1.1 Exploit petroleum geology for hydrocarbon exploration.
1.2 Execute geophysical survey, its analysis and presentation of result
1.3 Analyze oil reservoir, its characterization and model
1.4 Provide dynamic leadership and management for efficient and ethical performance services in the petroleum geoscience industry.
1.5 Contribute to society through teaching, research, consultancy and outreach in the area of petroleum geoscience.
Admission Requirements
Candidates must fulfill the common regulations governing Master of Science programmes and those of the School of Physical Science.
Holders of the following qualifications will be legit:
a) A BSc. degree in Geology, Petroleum Geoscience or its equivalent with at least a Second Class Honours (Upper Division) from a recognized University or equivalent from any other institution recognized by the Senate. In addition, candidates for Petroleum Geoscience programme should have taken undergraduate courses in Mathematics and Physics/Chemistry.
b) A BSc. degree in Geology or Petroleum Geology with a Second Class Honours (Lower Division) from a recognized University or equivalent from any other institution recognized by the Senate. In addition candidates for Petroleum Geoscience degree programme should have taken an undergraduate course in Mathematics and Physics/Chemistry. Further, the applicant must have at least two years’ work experience in a geology related field.
c) A pass degree of the University of Nairobi in Geology or equivalent from any other institution recognized by the Senate plus at least years relevant research/ work experience.
d) A holder of a degree in categories specifi ed above with a credit pass in a relevant postgraduate diploma or other equivalent qualification from the University of Nairobi or any other institution recognized by the Senate as being of comparable academic status or with at least 4 years of relevant work experience.
