MASTER OF SCIENCE IN METEOROLOGY

Overview

The Master of Science in Meteorology programme aims to equip students with skills, knowledge and competencies in the science of meteorology and its applications.

    1. The course consists of 6 core units, 6 electives and a research project.
    2. The minimum duration of the course shall be four semesters and a maximum of twelve semesters each of 15 weeks.
    3. A course unit shall be defined as consisting of 45 contact hours of lectures, tutorials and practicals.
    1. Candidates shall be required to take at least 3 course units and a maximum of 6 course units in a semester.

4.3       The candidate shall take 6 core units, 6 electives and a research project in meteorology.

 

The common regulations governing the Masters degree programmes in all faculties,         institutes and             schools shall apply.

    1. Holders of any of the following:
    1. A degree of the University of Nairobi of at least upper second in Meteorology or an equivalent qualification from any other institution recognised by the Senate.
    2. A lower second class degree of the University of Nairobi in Meteorology or an equivalent qualification from any other institution recognised by the Senate plus at least two years relevant research/work experience. 
    3. A pass degree of the University of Nairobi in Meteorology or an equivalent qualification from any other institution recognised by the Senate, with a working experience of at least five years in a relevant research/ operational institution.

A degree of the University of Nairobi  in any science based discipline or an equivalent qualification from any other institution recognised by the Senate, plus a Postgraduate Diploma in Meteorology

Exam Regulations

The examinations shall be governed by the general regulations for the Master of Science degree in the School of Physical Sciences and on approval by Senate.

7.1 Written Examinations

      1. Master of Science examinations shall be governed by the general regulations for the Masters degree programme in the School of Physical Sciences.
      2. A candidate shall not be allowed to sit any examination unless he or she has attended at least two thirds of the total lecture hours.
      3. Each unit shall be examined by a three hour written examination at the end of the semester during which the course is offered. 
      4. The end of semester examination shall constitute 70% of the total marks in each course unit while the continuous assessment shall constitute 30%.
      5. Continuous assessment shall comprise of assignments, tests, term papers and practicals where applicable.
      6. Pass mark for each course unit shall be 50%.  
      7. A candidate who fails in any unit may be allowed to re-sit or retake the failed units up to two times during the regular semester examinations.  
      8. The maximum score for a re-sit examination shall be 50%.  
      9. A candidate who fails in the second re-sit or has failed to complete the prescribed courses within the prescribed time shall, on the recommendation of the School of Physical Sciences and approval of senate, be discontinued.

7.2 Research Project

      1. The research project shall be assessed in accordance with the common regulations of the university postgraduate studies.
      2. Each candidate shall present, three weeks before the end of the semester of examination, a report of an approved research project, for examination.
      3. The project report and the oral presentation shall constitute 70% and 30% of the total marks, respectively. 
      4. The pass mark shall be 50%.
      5. A candidate who fails to satisfy the examiners in the project shall be allowed up to two re-submissions of the project report.
      6. A candidate who fails in the third attempt, it being a re-submission of the project, or fails to complete the programme within the prescribed period shall, on the recommendation of the School of Physical Sciences and approval of senate, be discontinued.

7.3 Moderation of Examinations

The general University of Nairobi examination policy shall apply. All university exams shall be moderated at two levels: internally and externally.

7.4 Grading System

Each course shall be graded out of a maximum of 100 marks and the pass mark for each course shall be 50%. Marks shall be translated into letter grades as follows:
70 – 100%                               A
60 – 69%                                 B
50 – 59%                                 C
Below 50%                              F (Fail)

7.5 Graduation Requirements

7.5.1    To qualify for the award of a Masters degree, candidates shall be required to have passed in at least Sixteen units, including the core courses and the project

7.6 Final Award of the degree

The final award shall be Master of Science in Meteorology.
