The School of Physical Sciences (Formally Faculty of Sciences) was developed in March 2006 following the restructuring of the University of Nairobi. It is one of the largest Schools in the College of Biological and Physical Sciences with a student population of over 3000 students both in Undergraduate and Postgraduate programmes. The School comprises the following five (5) Departments namely Chemistry, Geology, Geography and Environmental Studies, Meteorology and Physics.

The Departments of Geology, Meteorology and Physics are all housed in a two-storey building Complex (Former Faculty of Science building Complex), albeit in separate floors of the building. The Department of Chemistry, however is located in a single separate one-storey building that comprises of two levels plus a basement. Lastly, the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies has recently been linked to the School although located at main campus, Hyslop Building, 3rd Floor, Main Campus. All the Departments in the School of Physical Sciences have fully equipped laboratories and enjoy adequate shared facilities for teaching research within the larger College of Biological and Physical Sciences (CBPS).

The School of Physical Sciences is served by the Chiromo Campus Library and the e-resources platform which has a good stock of relevant books in the Biological and Physical Sciences and subscribes to most major journals in these fields. Additional shared facilities within the CBPS worth mentioning include a Glass blowing, Metal and wood fabrication workshop and a computer Laboratory for students.

The School offers both Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses which are on the more flexible course unit system. Applications seeking admission into specific programmes within the School are advised to obtain further information from the office of the Dean from the concerned Departments.

The main degree programs in the School are in these five subject areas. Students are however, free to combine subjects from other schools, namely the School of Mathematics and the School of Biological Sciences .

The School offers both undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Science is about innovation and discovery. Whether this means advancing knowledge in developing vaccines, designing the next generation of materials, etc., our driving force in the School of Physical Sciences is discovering this new knowledge and passing it on to our students. Our past successes are attributable to the hard work and dedication of our school, staff and students, who contribute to this never-ending process of discovery.

At the School of Physical Sciences , students learn about the Principles of pure science and the exciting worlds of fundamental and applied research. At the frontiers of science, distinguished researchers help students become original thinkers who make their own discoveries in scientific research. The size and scope of the School of Physical Sciences, which comprises of five (5) Departments and interdisciplinary collaborations (local, regional and international), allows us to offer a wide variety of programmes and options in conjunction with other schools (i.e. School of Biological Sciences, School of Mathematics and School of Computing and Informatics) that belong to the wider College of Biological and Physical Sciences (CBPS).

As a relatively new school, we plan to accomplish a great deal and have ambitious plans for the future which include development of new interdisciplinary programmes that are market driven and sensitive to the global trends in innovation research
