MASTER OF SCIENCE IN ENVIRONMENTAL CHEMISTRY

Overview

Environmental chemistry is the study of the interaction between chemical substances and man and the environment.  The aim of the degree program is to produce graduates who are well grounded in environmental science, project management and research skills.

The course will be a two year programme, the first year being course work only. A total of twelve taught courses will be offered over the two semesters and will comprise ten core courses and two elective courses.

2. The second year will be Research and Thesis.

Holders of the following shall be eligible for registration for a Master of Science Degree in Environmental chemistry;

 

  1. A degree of the University of Nairobi of at least Upper Second Class Honours in Chemistry or equivalent from any other institution recognized by the University.
  2. A degree of the University of Nairobi of at least Upper Second Class Honours in Chemistry combined with another science subject or equivalent from any other institution recognized by the University.
  3.  A lower Second Class degree of the University of  Nairobi in Chemistry or equivalent from any other institution recognized by the University plus at least two years relevant research/work experience
  4. A lower Second Class degree of the University of  Nairobi in Chemistry combined with another science subject or equivalent from any other institution recognized by the University plus at least two years relevant research/work experience
  5. A pass degree of the University of  Nairobi in Chemistry or equivalent from any other institution                recognized by the University plus at least five years relevant research/work experience
  6. A pass degree of the University of  Nairobi in Chemistry combined with another science subject or equivalent from any other institution recognized by the University plus at least five years relevant research/work experience

Graduates find employment in various government departments, parastatals, local international non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and intergovernmental bodies. Involved in environmental management, research and development. In industry, opportunities exist in product marketing, process control, quality assurance and product design. Opportunities also exist in the education sector.
