Showcasing Cutting Edge Research and Innovations by Students at CBPS to Celebrate UON@50

Call for Applications

As part of celebrating UON@50, the College of Biological and Physical Sciences (CBPS) plans to recognize and showcase cutting edge research and innovation by its students, both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

The research and/or innovations must be considered to be ground breaking by its ability or potential to provide solutions to societal challenges or potential for expanding the frontiers of science.

UON@50 CBPS Committee welcomes applications from current students at the College at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Applications should explicitly state what makes the research and/or innovation outstanding that it should be considered for showcasing and recognition demonstrating how it has impacted science and society or has demonstrable potential to impact science or society.

Applications must be accompanied with an endorsement letter from the applicant’s Chairman of Department/Dean/Director.

The selection of the research and innovations to be showcased will be on a competitive basis. Applications will be reviewed by an independent selection committee.

Background

The University of Nairobi owes its origin to several developments in higher education within the country and the region. The idea of an institution for higher learning in Kenya goes back to 1947 when the Kenya Government drew up a plan for the establishment of a technical and commercial institute in Nairobi.

By 1949, this plan had grown into an East African concept aimed at providing higher technical education for the region.

In September 1951, a Royal Charter was issued to the Royal Technical College of East Africa and the foundation stone of the college was laid in April 1952, later named the Royal College Nairobi in 1958.

The Royal College Nairobi was renamed University College, Nairobi on May 20, 1964, preparing students for bachelor's degrees awarded by the University of London, while also continuing to offer college diploma programmes. In 1966, the University College Nairobi began preparing students exclusively for degrees of the University of East Africa, with the exception of the Department of Domestic Science.

With effect from July 1, 1970, the University of East Africa was dissolved and the three East African countries set up their national Universities. This development saw the birth of the University of Nairobi established by an Act of Parliament.

Since 1970, the University of Nairobi has achieved many milestones and innovations which have contributed to its development and that of the nation.

The University has turned 50 years old and this calls for celebrations. The UON@50 celebrations.
COVID-19 VACCINATION ON GOING

The University Health Services is a registered COVID-19 Vaccination Centre.

The vaccination excercise commenced on Thursday April 8, 2021 at 8.30AM outside of the Main Students Clinic. It should be noted that the University Vaccination Centre will be required to observe Government prioritization guidelines and to comply with COVID-19 health protocols. In this regard, the following categories of the priority target groups will be eligible:

  1. All University of Nairobi Staff members (staff ID card required)
  2. Medical Students – To be vaccinated on Saturdays only
  3. Persons who are aged fifty eight (58) and above and are registered dependents of a University staff member

To this end, and in compliance with COVID-19 health protocols, the Director, ICTC, has developed an appropriate application that will facilitate booking for vaccination, allowing a maximum of 200 persons per day, hence crowd control. Please register for vaccination through the link - https://vaccination.uonbi.ac.ke/

Those who register for this voluntary vaccination exercise are advised that the vaccine will be administered in an open area and on the person’s shoulder and it is, therefore, encouraged that one presents in appropriate dressing (short sleeved/sleeveless), for ease of time management. Other pertinent information will be shared at the Vaccination Centre.
REVIEW OF SEMESTER DATES

This is to inform all students that the semester dates have been extended by three weeks following the COVID-19 3rd wave disruption which led to closure of the University. Consequently, the School reverted to online teaching and learning to mitigate the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic situation in the country.

This is therefore to inform all students that the end of semester examinations will commence on 7th June, 2021 up to and including 18th June, 2021.

Kindly prepare adequately and ensure you register for all the course units for second semester and pay all requisite fees as per statute XXX on fees guidelines.

The following information outlines all the steps new students need to register successfully:

At the end of this registration process applicants should have:

  1. Filled out joining forms and uploaded them on the Students Management Information System (SMIS).

  2. An Active students email account

  3. Activated the Active Directory (AD Account)

  4. Paid Fees

  5. A Student profile

  6. Received registration confirmation on SMS from the University

  7. Registered for your courses

To register:

STEP 1:

 Applicants can access the University of Nairobi student self–service portal Students Management Information System (SMIS):  https://smis.uonbi.ac.ke/ . To log in, Students will use the log in details sent to them via email; or write to the following offices to request the log in details.

 Undergraduate Students: admissions@uonbi.ac.ke  and for  Postgraduate students: gs@uonbi.ac.ke 

STEP 2:

Once an applicant logs in, they are required to download the comprehensive joining Instructions (Academic, Legal and Health Requirements). This document contains important forms that need to be filled out and uploaded on to the system. Print all the forms and fill them out in full as guided (steps 1-22). Scan the filled documents and upload. Please ensure you scan your passport photograph and upload it to the system. Place your request for student ID as detailed in the Joining Instructions document JI/17. The IDs will be availed to the respective Deans’/Directors’ offices once printed for your collection.

STEP 3:

The applicant can then access the fee structure on the SMIS system with guidelines on how to pay the prescribed fees. Please note that separate guidelines apply for Government-sponsored (module 1)  and Self-sponsored (Module 2). Fee payment guidelines

STEP 4:

Once payment is made, students are requested to wait for at least 48 hours then log back into the system to complete the online registration and submit a request for registration. Students can only submit their registration request once the portal is opened on Monday, 24th August 2020.  Applicants will receive an SMS alert once the registration process is confirmed.

STEP 5:

Upon confirmation, applicants will then log in to the portal: https://smis.uonbi.ac.ke/ to complete the student profile, fill out all the sections on the table provided and create a student’s email account and an active directory account as guided. Student email accounts are critical, students will ONLY receive official communication from the University on this email address. Students are also required to create an Active Directory Account (AD Account: This account will grant student access to various Online Learning platforms and vast University online resources)

STEP 6:
