Overview
Meteorological information plays an essential role for air navigation and is required to ensure the safety and efficiency of civil aviation operations.
People working with the aviation industry or meteorology are expected to reflect technological developments including interpretation of radar information towards making of short-term forecasts for specific aerodomes.
The Kenya Vision 2030 envisions Nairobi as a hub for the region. The proposed hub will rely heavily on air transportation efficiency and safety. This requires training of highly skilled personnel in Aviation Meteorology.
Aviation Meteorology has been offered at postgraduate diploma level in the Department of Meteorology and in order for the postrgraduate Diploma graduates to advance academically an Msc in Aviation Meteorology Programme , offering advanced skills and knowledge in the aviation industry, has been developed.
Structure
4.1 The course consists of course work, laboratory work, continuous assessment, written examination and a research project.
4.2 The continuous assessment shall comprise tests, assignments, practicals and term papers.
4.3 The candidate shall be required to take a minimum of 16 course units.
4.4 The candidate shall take 8 core units.
4.5 In addition, the candidate shall take a compulsory research project in aviation meteorology plus a minimum of 5 elective course units.

- The research project is equivalent to four course units.
4.7 The course shall be covered in a minimum period of four semesters and a maximum of 8 semesters each of 15 weeks.

- Candidates shall be required to take at least 3 course units and a maximum of 6 course units in a semester.
- Each unit shall be covered in 45 contact hours
Admission Requirements
A holder of a first degree of the University of Nairobi or an equivalent qualification from any other institution recognized by the Senate shall be eligible for admission if he/she has one of the following qualifications;
a) At least upper second class honors degree, in Meteorology or equivalent
b) Postgraduate Diploma in Aviation Meteorology or equivalent
c) Lower second-class honors degree, in Meteorology with a working experience of at least two years in a relevant research/operational institution
d) Pass level degree, in Meteorology with a working experience of at least five years in a relevant research/operational institution
Exam Regulations
6.1 Written examinations
6.1.1 A candidate shall not be allowed to sit any examination unless he or she has attended at least two thirds of the prescribed lecture hours.
6.1.2 Each unit shall be examined by a two hour written examination at the end of the semester during which the course is offered.

- The end of semester examination shall constitute 70% of the total marks in each course unit while the continuous assessment shall constitute 30%, except for SMR643, SMR 644 and SMR 689 for which the end of semester examination and Continuous assessment shall comprise of 50% each. Continuous assessment shall comprise of assignments, tests, term papers and practicals.
- The pass mark for each course unit shall be 50%.
- A candidate who fails in not more than two of the taught units, at any given level, may be allowed to take a resit examination in the failed units within four months after issue of provisional results.
- The maximum score for a resit examination shall be 50%.
- A candidate who fails the resit shall be recommended for discontinuation.

- Project
- The research project shall be assessed in accordance with the common regulations of the university postgraduate studies.
- Each candidate shall present, three weeks before the end of the semester examination, a report of an approved research project, in any one of the areas of specialisation in Aviation meteorology for examination. The report shall be expected to demonstrate acquisition of the relevant research skills and their effective application to an investigation of substance and significance in Aviation Meteorology. The research will culminate in a Research Project Report and shall constitute 70% of the marks.
- The candidate shall, in addition to 6.2.2 above, present the project report orally in form of a seminar before a panel of examiners. The oral presentation shall constitute 30% of the marks.
- The pass mark for the Project shall be 50%.
- A candidate who fails to satisfy the examiners in the project on first submission shall be allowed one re-submission of the project report.
- A candidate who fails in the re-submission of the project, or fails to complete the programme within the prescribed period shall be discontinued.
- The research project shall culminate in a Research Project Report.

7.0 DEGREE Award
The final award shall be Master of Science in Aviation Meteorology. The grades for the units done shall appear in the transcript.
